Eddy current thread detection probes

Eddy Current Sensors

Versatile Products eddy current sensors are designed to meet the needs of your application.

Whether that means taking one of our existing eddy current sensors and modifying it to meet your size requirements or designing one from the ground up, we can design and test a sensor for the eddy current inspection of your part or assembly quickly with no cost to you!

Typical eddy current sensors range in length from about 5 to 8 inches long (body and tip). The typical body diameter ranges from ½ to 1 inch in diameter. The tips are made either from stainless steel or Delrin depending on the size, application and customer requirements. The tips are spring loaded so the eddy current sensor is not damaged if the part under test is missing a machined detail such as a hole. Tight tolerances are maintained so the eddy current sensors remain “non-contact” ensuring a long life.

Eddy current sensors work best when they are designed to be about .040” to .100” difference in size from the part under test. As an example, for eddy current inspection of a 1/4” threaded hole we would insert an eddy current sensor whose tip is 3/16” in diameter into the hole. For a 1/2 threaded stud the eddy current sensor would be designed to fit over the stud and would have an inside diameter of about 9/16”.

Other things that affect the design of the eddy current sensor are the length of the area to be tested, the material (Al, steel, brass, etc) and the type of machined detail or assembly to be inspected.
